Using sunscreen has become part of everyone's skincare routine. Sunscreen protects against UV damage, moisturizes and keeps the skin in good condition, preventing sunburn and damage over time. Why protect yourself from the sun?
The sun is known for the precious benefits it can give to the body and mood. Why do we age from sun exposure?
Aging due to sun exposure corresponds to the photoaging and to understand what happens in detail, we need to focus on the structure of the skin.
The skin acts as a barrier thanks to the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the epidermis, which consists of protein-enriched corneocytes embedded in a lipid-rich extracellular matrix.
This organized "brick and mortar" lipid shield provides a waterproof barrier that prevents water from escaping and toxic substances from entering through the skin. As we age, the proliferation of basal keratinocytes (i.e., keratinocytes that reproduce in the deeper layers of the epidermis) is reduced, resulting in an overall thinning of the epidermis and the dermal-epidermal junction appears flattened. This is why photoaged skin appears sagging with coarse wrinkles, with telangiectasia (chronic dilation of capillaries) and irregular pigmentation with dark spots (1).
