Spray or cream: which is the most effective sun product ? To understand whether to rely on a cream or spray texture, it is important to consider various factors such as skin type, phototype and habits that are usually observed on vacation, at the seaside or in the mountains. If sunscreen is the iconic and evergreen product, the new sun sprays contain a mix of vegetable oils that promise not to dry the skin. How, then, to choose the most effective sunscreens? Here are some precious tips by Skinius.
Start with high protection sunscreens
For years, high sun protection has been demonized because it was thought to slow down tanning. In reality, SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is nothing more than a value that determines the time within which the skin can be exposed to the sun without showing erythema. Clinical tests to establish the protection factor are done on a group of volunteers to whom sunscreen is applied. Subsequently, the skin reactions under UV rays are verified. In particular, the time in which sunburn is generated on protected skin compared to unprotected skin is monitored. The result is the value that we see reported on the packaging of sun products: the best are those that usually have an SPF of 50 or 30. Be wary of a product that promises 100 sun protection (here we explain why).
In case of light and sensitive skin it is imperative to use sunscreens with high protection , as well as if you go on holiday to exotic paradises near the equator. Here the sun's rays are more direct and invasive on the skin and it is very important to choose a sunscreen with SPF50. For darker phototypes it is still recommended to apply a sunscreen 50 for the first few days of sun and then eventually switch to sunscreen 30.
Cream or spray: which are the most effective sunscreens?
To find the best sun products suitable for your skin type you need to know how to listen to your dermatological needs. Even if sunscreens are seasonal products, you need to choose them carefully so as not to find yourself back from vacation with dehydrated or shinier skin than usual. Here's how to choose between sunscreen and sun spray:
- Sunscreen : recommended for dry and dehydrated skin and for the face. The best sunscreens combine high protection with a lighter and fresher texture, which is easily absorbed and penetrates deep into the layers of the epidermis, keeping the skin hydrated and more resistant to UV rays.
- Sunscreen spray: ideal for athletes, those who are always on the move and those with combination/oily skin. Spray sunscreen is more practical and versatile, which is why it is used especially for body and hair products. The most innovative ones have invisible textures that are sprayed instead of being spread.
Water resistant YES or NO?
The most effective sunscreens have the wording "water resistant" on the packaging. This means that as soon as we enter the sea or pool the sun filters do not disperse and ensure protection from UV rays even for about half an hour after swimming. If you dry yourself with a towel the protective action is further weakened, which is why it is imperative to reapply the sunscreen or spray immediately after swimming even if the wording "water resistant" is present. Dermatologists recommend applying high sun protection every two hours to ensure effective protection for the skin.
Eco-friendly protection: how to reduce environmental impact at sea
The best sun products concentrate low environmental impact chemical filters in their formulations. Thanks to research and new technologies, it is possible to use high SPFs that are biodegradable and respectful of the marine environment. Choosing a sunscreen of this type is essential to reduce pollution of the sea and oceans, protecting underwater and non-underwater flora and fauna. Plusolina, for example, is an Italian dermatological invention that, thanks to the combination of particular vegetable oils, promotes a preventive and protective action on the skin from UV rays. Look for a sunscreen against UVA and UVB rays. The former are more dangerous and can cause serious long-term skin damage.
The most suitable sunscreen for children
Sunscreens for children must absolutely have a high sun protection factor. It is precisely during childhood that UV rays, if taken without the necessary precautions, can cause deep damage to the dermis that will manifest in adolescence or adulthood in the form of skin tumors. To prevent side effects of this type, follow some precautions to protect your children's skin:
- Always prefer the application of sunscreen products specifically designed for children.
- Use a hat and sunglasses.
- Avoid the central hours of the day and extend the time under the umbrella.
- Also remember to stay hydrated on the beach with plenty of water and seasonal fruit and, when you return, use a delicate after-sun product for children .
When it comes to choosing between sunscreen and sun spray for children, a sunscreen is preferable for newborns. For older children (about 6 years old and up) or simply for the more lively ones who love to play on the beach, a high protection and water-resistant sun spray is a great choice.
Can adult sunscreen be used on children ? Sunscreen products for children are specific and recommended for the little ones, so it is preferable to apply specific protection. In an emergency, however, you can apply your own sunscreen spray or cream (provided it has SPF50) even on children older than 36 months.
